BEHIND THE NEWS JUNE 1981
In the November 1980 issue of BEHIND THE NEWS we wrote as follows: “Western governments understand very well what is happening in Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe – and what is bound to happen quite soon, but they are not telling”. We were referring to the unresolved struggle between Robert Mugabe’s ZANLA forces, representing the Shona population, and Joshua Nkomo’s ZIPRA, former terrorists, all Matabele.
We were right or were we wrong in predicting a collision of the forces “quite soon”? We were right, but a highly disciplined Western establishment Press, radio and television succeeded in converting to collision when it came into a typical 20th century “non-event” – something that is made not to happen even after it has happened. Detailed coverage with pictures and videotape recordings was in any case impossible, because the reporters were rigorously excluded from the main trouble spots.
Sure enough, there were reports about some quite serious disturbance in the Bulawayo area, and for some time the town was in a state of siege. It was reported that 95 people had been killed, an estimate that later increased to 200.
All we know for sure is that a full and truthful account of what happened has not been made public. The information we have from military sources in Zimbabwe is that at least 3000 were killed, most of them members of a ZIPRA contingent that was halted on its way from Gwaai in the north-east, trying to link up with their comrades in the Bulawayo area.
Said one company commander: “On my own portion of the battle zone I counted 500 bodies and I know that many of the ZIPRA wounded were carried into the bush, where no doubt many died”.
White ‘World of Lies’
We also know that this was no ZANLA victory, no Mugabe victory – it was a victory of the Whites now in the service of Mugabe or, rather of those other foreign Whites who have decided to install Mugabe as their power proxy.
Without White intervention there would have been a very different story to tell.
The well trained and heavily armed ZIPRA men (Matabele) with their M25 tanks, troop carriers cars with the Soviet field artillery were stopped in their tracks and blown to smithereens by White-piloted fighter aircraft firing rockets, and by armored cars with their 105-mm guns, also manned by Whites, some of them even former members of the hated Selous Scouts.
One eye-witness, who was listening in on the radio intercom, tells how three armored troop carriers were “taken care of”. Asked if he could see the first vehicle as it appeared over the crest of a hill, the armored car commander replied with a long-drawn out”ye-e-es”. “Can you take it out?” he was asked. Reply “Ye-e-es”. “There’s another over to the right – see it?”. “Ye-e-es”. “Can you take it out?”. “Ye-e-es”.
One after another, all loaded with men, the troop carriers vanished in an eruption of flame, dust and smoke.
Our informants in Zimbabwe with military contacts are agreed that there was no way in which Mugabe could have avoided a military take-over by Nkomo’s people without massive White assistance. By comparison with the Matabele, who are one of Africa’s martial races, the Shona are an undisciplined rabble and are quite useless as fighters except as hit-and-run terrorists operation against defenseless civilians.
As elsewhere in Africa, the external forces have installed in power that section of the indigenous population that will always need foreign aid to keep itself in power and can, therefore, be easily manipulated from outside,.
In exactly the same way that the Ashanti were suppressed in Ghana, the Biafrans in Nigeria and the Watussi in the former Ruanda-Urundi, so the strong and self-willed Matabele are to be prevented from asserting their natural superiority in Zimbabwe.
ZIPRA still have large, well trained forces in Zambia, armed with Soviet weapons, indirectly under the control of a Russian general stationed at Lusaka, which is also the headquarters of the Soviet Union’s main Southern African strategist, Dr. Solidovnikov. It can be safely predicted that the bloodletting in Zimbabwe is far from over.
For Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, the trip to the Far East must have been a welcome relief after the tensions in Zimbabwe, where he now leans heavily for protection on the para-military Police Support Unit which is entirely officered by Whites.
Meanwhile, the White exodus continues, and with it the efficiency and discipline which made Rhodesia one of the best-governed countries in the world.
There is another side to the Rhodesian story which needs to be told: Many Whites, especially those clinging onto their business enterprises, find that by abrogating certain personal standards of their own, they can adapt quite well to the new conditions.
For example, if they have trouble with a Black employee, they don’t dismiss him as they once would have done; if they do, he will presently return with ZANLA officials and the employer will be in trouble. So now the smart employer himself goes to the ZANLA office and parts with some dollars, and then it is the employee who is in trouble.
Thus, the poor Black man at the bottom of the pile finds himself still outsmarted by the White, often more painfully than ever before. Not surprisingly, very many Blacks who have not been able to get onto the ZANLA gravy train are today bitterly disillusioned.
Talking about standards, a Zimbabwe businessman recently found himself on a Zambia internal aircraft flying between Kitwe and Lusaka, filled to capacity – plus a number of other passengers standing all the way!
Then, having received the key to his room at one of Lusaka’s most expensive hotels, imagine his surprise on walking in to find his bed occupied by a pair of copulating Blacks. Other hotel guests laughed at his complaint, telling him that the clerk at the reception counter made a business for an hour or so for the convenience of local prostitutes, who wait for their customers in the hotel lounge.
It is only when lives are at stake that the lying has to stop. The African reality could hardly be better expressed than a page from the Jeppesen airways navigational guide, which contains a map showing where ground navigational services are not to be trusted! This includes all of Africa except South Africa, South West Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Tunisia – which are evidently considered safe.
The manual contains IATA-approved radio communication procedures which enable air crews to monitor all traffic in the zone where they are flying, so as to reduce the risk of collision.
Still on the subject of “standards”, Edgar Tekere, one-time altar-boy in Salisbury’s Anglican Cathedral, recently Zimbabwe Minister of Manpower, and self-confessed murderer of a White Rhodesian farmer, Mr. Gerald Adams, was on Sunday, May 24, the recipient in absentia of a B.Com. Degree from the University of South Africa, Pretoria. It is understood that Tekere was taking a correspondence course with UNISA in 1972, the usual matriculation qualifications having been waived.
